Bikalp Herbals: A Journey Combining Tradition and Innovation
The story of Bikalp Herbals is not just the story of a startup, but a wonderful confluence of the dedication, knowledge, and vision of two generations—Dr. V. K. Lal and his daughter, Stuti Lal.
Dr. V. K. Lal, M.Pharm (Ph.D), educated at IIT-BHU, dedicated his life to harmonizing Ayurvedic wisdom with modern scientific standards. He began his career as an Assistant Research Officer at RRI, Ranikhet, where he conducted in-depth studies of medicinal plants in Himalayan regions—from Uttarakhand to Arunachal Pradesh—and the forests of Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand. These years spent in the midst of nature taught him that the true strength of Ayurveda lies in its simplicity and connection with daily life.
Subsequently, he worked as a Senior Scientific Officer at the Central Indian Pharmacopoeia Laboratory, Ghaziabad, and later made significant contributions at the national level as Deputy Director at CCRAS, Ministry of Ayush, New Delhi. He developed 22 monographs for the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India and contributed to the Indian Pharmacopoeia (1995 and 2007). During 1989–2000, he served as a Notified Government Analyst under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act in several states, including Bihar, Orissa, Goa, Rajasthan, and Delhi. He also played key roles in DSIR, TIFAC, and other national committees, helping to ensure the standardization and quality of Ayurvedic medicines.
During COVID-19, when kadha (herbal decoction) was widely promoted but confusion prevailed regarding its ingredients and standardization, Dr. Lal developed a scientifically defined and standardized kadha. This endeavor proved successful and demonstrated that Ayurveda is effective only when it is scientifically balanced and reliable. This very idea later became the foundation of Bikalp Herbals.
Giving a new direction to this scientific legacy was his daughter, Stuti Lal. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi, and a master’s in Business Analytics from Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai. Following this, she contributed to the field of education and technology while working as an Assistant Professor at Sagar Institute of Technology and Management, Barabanki.
In the post-COVID era, Stuti Lal realized that people need health solutions that are simple, quick, and reliable. With this thought, she established Bikalp Herbals as a startup. This initiative received incubation from IIM Kashipur, CSIR-IITR, and the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad, which provided it with institutional strength and direction for innovation. She received guidance from Healthcare Marketing expert professors at IIM Ahmedabad and experienced managers from leading companies like Dabur, giving the venture strategic and commercial vision.
Thus, Dr. V. K. Lal’s decades of scientific experience and Stuti Lal’s modern, data-driven, and entrepreneurial thinking converge to make Bikalp Herbals a platform that is a powerful confluence of tradition and innovation. It is not just about products, but a vision—to make Ayurveda simple, accessible, and a part of daily life. Dr. V. K. Lal’s journey is not just a collection of achievements, but a symbol of a deep commitment—to adapt Ayurveda to modern society while maintaining its authenticity. And Stuti Lal’s efforts further this commitment, ensuring that coming generations also embrace health in a simple, reliable, and natural form.
“Eat from the heart… Digest with ease”
This captures the essence of this thinking—where science, tradition, and lifestyle come together.
